Azura Benguerra Island in Mozambique was hand built by the local community blending designer modern chic with traditional Mozambique features including wooden beams and thatched jekka roofs. The island opened as a resort in 2007 as on of the first luxury Indian Ocean eco-island retreats, providing the ultimate private luxury holiday hideaways.
Benguerra Island is one of 5 islands in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Benguerra is the second largest island measuring approximately 11km x 5.5 km and is known for its unspoilt white sandy beaches, exciting dive sites and fabulous fishing. Located just north east of Vilanculos, the nearest town where you are met by a state of the art Eurocopter to whisk you away and on to Benguerra. The island has approx. 2000 inhabitants which includes over 350 children who attend a school built by Azura's Rainbow Fund Charity. There are no shops, other than small local trading posts, so please ensure you pack everything you may need, especially any medication you may require.
Benguerra Island – Climate – generally warm and sunny year round, but is exceptionally dry. Breezes are usually light and the sea temperature varies with the seasons and currents between 24 °c and 30 °c.
Accommodation available on Benguerra Island consists of : 20 stunning, beachfront villas including 3 Beach Villas, 3 Luxury Beach Villas, 10 Infinity Beach Villas, Villa Amizade ( 2 bedrooms and the Presidential Villa ( 3 bedrooms) and recently added 2 Royal Beach Villas. Each one is very spacious with subtle differences, for example, Infinity and Luxury Beach villas extend over a private area of 650m2, the Infinity Beach Villas benefit from a prime position, larger bathroom with freeform bath, and 5m infinity pool. The Luxury Beach Villas have 3.5m plunge pools.The Beach Villa is slightly smaller overall but is in a wonderful location.The villas are all nestled amidst the indigenous trees and vegetation creating guests with their own private sanctuary to be one with the environment. Royal Villas are the largest ( 172 sq meteres) and most luxurious offering infinity pools and magnificent sea views

The communal areas around the island are all located right on the pristine beach, looking on to the sea offering different spots to relax, formally dine at the Jellyfish restaurant which also serves breakfast, enjoy a drink in the star bar, or catch up with the world outside in the media room with TV and internet. The internet network does not cover the villas, except the Presidential Villa. There is a PC in the library that has internet access, or guests bring a laptop or smartphone. There is also a boutique at reception.

Dining Options :Where to dine is up to the guests - informal 'feet in the sand' dining experiences, picnics in secluded spots, dine by candlelight on the beach under stars, relax in the comfort and privacy of your own villa, or sample a 7 course tasting dinner in the Jellyfish Restaurant.The island cuisine focus where possible, is on fresh local produce such as fish and seafood – offering irresistible signature dishes complemented with fine wines. If guests have any particular dietary requirements they should advise as far in advance as possible, as some specialist ingredients may take as long as 8 weeks to reach the island.

Villa Amizade and the Presidential Villa are ideal families, or the Infinity Beach Villas can accommodate an extra bed without compromising guest space. Children and teen activities at Azura Benguerra, explore the natural environment. Children can learn to dive at Azura from age 8, fishing is perfect for all ages.

Marine Life / Flora -Fauna - Benguerra is a sand island which has spectacular moving dunes and a diverse range of habitats for exotic and endemic wildlife.
On the lsland there are fresh water lakes; home to crocodiles, fish and migrant wading birds, the beautifulgreater Flamingo', remnant forests along the dunes, grasslands and swamps which house a variety of bird lifeand mammals.

Policy
Immigration and border procedures:
Visas are normally available on arrival but we recommend that they be purchased in advance from your local Mozambican embassy. Not required by South African passport holders.
After clearing customs, an Azura representative will be there to assist. They assist guests every day at the airport and know the procedures well. Once bags are claimed and documents stamped, the Azura representative will escort guests to the waiting area and then advise when the helicopter it is ready to depart. Waiting times can vary and depends on the number of passengers flying that day, as the helicopter can only accommodate 4 passengers at a time. Azura guests are given preferential transfer whenever possible.
In the event of overweight luggage being charged, payment is made at the airlines offices using credit cards only. Luggage should be tagged clearly and secured/closed with a padlock whilst traveling to Mozambique. Passport, wallet and valuables should be placed in hand luggage for check-in purposes.
Private charters can be arranged with the island so that the helicopter or vehicle
Check-in at Azura will take place in the lounge and guests are given details of all the activities available. Check-out at Azura is at 10.30 am on the day of departure

How to get to Benguerra Island, Mozambique:
Fly from Johannesburg International Airport to Vilanculous Mozambique - flying time from Johannesburg is approx. 1 hour and 40 mins - Usually Max baggage 20kg including hand luggage.
A state of the art Eurocopter takes guests from Vilanculos straight to the helipad on the island - flying time of 10-15 minutes.
